There are several ways that you can edit TIFF files while you are in Preview mode.

Tip: You can zoom in for increased accuracy and drag ruler guides into the preview to aid with precise selection of an area.

Editing TIFF files using the Marquee tool and the Edit menu

Use the Rectangular or Polygonal Marquee tool to select an area in the TIFF file, and select the desired Edit menu option:

OptionDescription
Clear

Removes all pixels from the selected area

Fill

Fills the selected area completely to make it solid

Fill with Min Dot

Fills the selected area with halftone dots sized to the number of pixels specified in Preferences > Advanced > Min Dot size. Your selection must include some existing halftone dots so that the algorithm can calculate the frequency and angle of the halftone dots. If no halftone dots are included in the selection, nothing changes.

Use this option to improve highlight areas in which the dots may be too small to adequately form on a flexo plate, or use it to tone down specular highlights that have no halftone dot at all and thus may create a white glare on the image.

Remove stray dots

Removes dust artifacts that may be produced during copydot scanning

This option analyzes the halftone grid and removes only pixel clusters that are off-grid, which indicates that they are not true halftone dots.

Fill with Adjacent dot

Fills the selected area with halftone dots, based on the halftone dots at the edges of the selected area.

Use this option to fill in scratches or other undesired white or highlight areas in the TIFF file.

Sometimes a selected area must be changed so that the dot used to fill the area is properly calculated. The suitability of the results can vary, depending on the shape of the halftone dot used. This option works best with a true round flexo dot and works less well with a Euclidean dot, especially as the dot approaches the midtone and changes to a square. Tones darker than 50 percent are not affected.

Show scum dot

Selects and deletes any pixel clusters in the selected area that are below a determined minimum size

To delete all pixel clusters below a certain size, specify 0 for the first number and the desired minimum pixel cluster for the second number.

For example, setting 0 and 9 would result in all pixel clusters of 8 or fewer pixels being selected for removal.

The minimum setting is designed to preserve HyperFlex Classic or HyperFlex Advanced for enhancing flexo dot formation on LAMS plates. If HyperFlex was configured at 3 pixels, then you can set 3 pixels as the minimum size and the desired minimum printing dot size as the second number.

For more information, see Small Scum dot size...(X) to (Y) pixels in Advanced preferences

Editing TIFF files using the Modify menu

In the Modify menu, select any of the Rotate (, 90°, 180°, or 270°), Flip (None, Horizontal, or Vertical), and Invert settings, and then select File > Save or Save As to save the modified file.

Cropping the TIFF files to the same size using the Crop tool

  1. Use the Crop  tool to select an area.
  2. Double-click inside the selected area to crop to the selected size.
  3. Select File > Save or Save As to save the cropped file.
