You need to trap a variety of objects that contain different ink characteristics that require specific trap settings.

Create a job

  1. If it is not already open, start Prinergy Workshop.
  2. In Job Finder, right-click your main group, and choose New Job.
  3. Type the job name XX_Multiple_Trap_Widths (where <XX> represents your initials).
  4. Click Create.
  5. Minimize the Job Manager window.

Copy an input file to the job folder and add input files to the job

  1. From your workstation, locate: Prinergy Activity Practice Files / Act_40_Multiple Trap Widths / Input File
  2. Restore Job Manager.
  3. Open the Input File folder. 
  4. Drag the Deux Metallics.pdf file to the Job Manager's Input Files area.
  5. In the Add Input Files dialog box that appears, under Options, click Select and select the 1stRef-Normz refine process template.
  6. Click OK.
    Your file is copied to the UserDefinedFolders folder.
  7. In the Start Process dialog box, click OK to start the Refine process.

Color map the refined PDF page

  1. In the Pages pane, select Deux Metallics.p1.pdf.
  2. From the Process menu, select the process template: Refine > Refine > 2ndRef-MapColors.
  3. In the Start Process dialog box, click the Color Mapping button.
  4. In the Color Mappings dialog box, select Dielines.
  5. In the Color Information section, select Add.
  6. In the Select a Color Library dialog box, select the following:
    SystemCMYK
    Job (XX_Multiple_Trap_Widths)
  7. Click OK.
  8. In the Color Editor dialog box, select the following:
    Trapping Information: 
    Opacity= Dieline 
    Alternate Color Space = 100% Black
  9. Click OK.
  10. In the Color Mappings dialog box, select Dark Blue Background.
  11. In the Color Information section, select Add.
  12. In the Select a Color Library dialog box, select the following:
    SystemCMYK
    Job (XX_Multiple_Trap_Widths)
  13. Click OK.
  14. In the Color Editor dialog box, select the following:
    Trapping Information: 
    Opacity= Normal 
    Alternate Color Space = 100C, 50M, 20K
  15. Click OK.
  16. In the Color Mappings dialog box, select Light Blue Type.
  17. In the Color Information section, select Add.
  18. In the Select a Color Library dialog box, select the following:
    SystemCMYK
    Job (XX_Multiple_Trap_Widths)
  19. Click OK.
  20. In the Color Editor dialog box, select the following:
    Trapping Information: 
    Opacity= Normal 
    Alternate Color Space = 60C, 20M, 20Y
  21. Click OK.
  22. In the Color Mappings dialog box, select Metallic Silver.
  23. In the Color Information section, select Add.
  24. In the Select a Color Library dialog box, select the following:
    SystemCMYK
    Job (XX_Multiple_Trap_Widths)
  25. Click OK.
  26. In the Color Editor dialog box, select the following:
    Trapping Information: 
    Opacity= Opaque 
    Alternate Color Space = 20C, 50K
  27. Click OK.
    Note: For the purpose of this activity, it is not necessary to map the Metallic Gold color.
  28. In the Color Mappings dialog box, click OK.
  29. In the Start Process dialog box, click OK.

Trap the PDF page using the Kodak PDF trap editor

  1. Open the Deux Metallics.p1.pdf file in Adobe Acrobat.
  2. In Acrobat, click the Kodak PDF Trap Editor button on the toolbar to start PDF Trap Editor.
  3. Click the Trap Page icon.
  4. In the Trap Page section, enter a value of 0.25 pt (.07mm). Click the Trap Page button.
  5. Select Highlight Traps to view the elements that have been trapped.

Edit Silver and Blue

  1. Using the Zoom tool, enlarge one of the globes.
  2. Right-click the highlighted trap line dividing the silver globe border and the dark blue background. Choose Select all <Silver/Blue> traps.
  3. Open the Properties Editor dialog box.
  4. Select the dark blue background and change the Trap Size Width and Height to be half the normal trap (e.g. 0.1 pts). Click Apply. This will reduce the size of the traps between the normal and metallic inks.

Edit Blue and Gold

Repeat the same procedures outlined above with the Gold and Blue traps. Reduce them by the same amount.

Edit Metallics

  1. Using the Zoom tool, enlarge the area where the rounded portion of the gold M touches the silver portion of the globe (North America).
  2. Right-click this highlighted trap and choose Select all <Gold/Silver> traps.
  3. Using the Delete selected traps tool, delete the selected traps.
  4. Close the trapped PDF file and save the changes.
  5. Close XX_Multiple_Trap_Widths Job Manager.
