You need to create a vector trap using the Kodak PDF Trap Editor. You then need to edit the trap.

Create a job

  1. If it is not already open, start Prinergy Workshop.
  2. In Job Finder, right-click your main group, and choose New Job.
  3. Type the job name XX_Basic_Trap (where <XX> represents your initials).
  4. Click Create.
  5. Minimize the Job Manager window.

Copy an input file to the job folder and add input files to the job

  1. From your workstation, locate: Prinergy Activity Practice Files / Act_36_Basic Trap / Input File
  2. Restore Job Manager.
  3. Open the Input File folder. 
  4. Drag the No Curves.pdf file to the Job Manager's Input Files area.
  5. In the Add Input Files dialog box that appears, under Options, click Select and select the 1stRef-Normz refine process template.
  6. Click OK.
    Your file is copied to the UserDefinedFolders folder.
  7. In the Start Process dialog box, click OK to start the Refine process.

Select a unit of measure

  1. Open the No Curves.p1.pdf page in Adobe Acrobat.
  2. From the Acrobat menu, choose: Preferences > Kodak PDF Trap Editor
  3. From the Units menu, select a preferred unit of measure.
    Note: For the purposes of this training, the units of measure used are points and/or millimeters.
  4. Click OK.

Trap the PDF page using the Kodak PDF trap editor

  1. In Acrobat, click the Kodak PDF Trap Editor button on the toolbar to start PDF Trap Editor.
  2. Notes:
    • In Acrobat 8 or 9, you can also access PDF Trap Editor by selecting Advanced > Kodak Tools > Kodak PDF Trap Editor.
    • In Acrobat X, select View > Tools > Kodak Tools and then select the Kodak PDF Trap Editor icon from the Kodak Tools section of the Tools panel on the right.
    • Depending on the Acrobat Display preferences that you have defined on your workstation, it might be necessary to turn off the Smooth Line Art option. A warning message will appear. To continue, click Yes.
  3. Click the Trap Page icon.
    Note: To activate icon selection, click in the trap window first.
  4. View the Trap Page dialog box options.
  5. In the Trap Size section, enter a value of 0.2 pt (.07mm) for width and height.
  6. Click the Trap Page button.
  7. From the toolbar, select the Highlight traps icon to display the applied traps. Click the icon again to deselect the highlighted traps.
  8. Select the Highlight objects set to overprint icon to view the overprinting objects. Note that the graphics of the car are overprinting. Click the icon again to deselect the overprinting objects.

Edit the vector trap

  1. Click the Select object tool in the toolbar. Using the shift key, select both car graphics.
  2. Clear the Overprint check box and click Apply.
  3. Deselect all objects in the artwork. Click Highlight objects set to overprint to confirm overprints have been taken off.
  4. Click the Trap Page icon.
  5. In the Trap Size section, edit the existing trap value by entering a new value of 0.1 pt (.035mm) for width and height. Click the Trap Page button.
  6. Click the Highlight traps icon to display the new trap value.
  7. Click the Print Production tool in the vertical Acrobat toolbar. Select Output Preview to turn colors on and off. This will assist in visually confirming that an image is correctly trapped.
  8. Close and save the PDF file.
  9. Close XX_Basic_Trap Job Manager.
