Why you should complete this activity

Plate Builder is a Kodak plug-in for Adobe Acrobat software that can add white, bump, and varnish separations (plates) to refined PDF pages.
This activity is important because it illustrates how to:

  • Access Plate Builder
  • Build three independent separations

What you'll need

For this activity you need to locate:

  • Prinergy Activity Practice Files /Act_33_Plate Builder

The instructor or coach will provide you with the location of the practice files.
Note: If you are completing this activity on your own or coaching others in your shop, copy the Prinergy Activity Practice Files folder (available on the Kodak Partner Place internet portal at https://partnerplace.kodak.com/) directly to your workstation. For further information about these procedures, see Activity 1.

What you need to know

Plate types

In Plate Builder, the following plate types can be created:

  • White Plate: Is used as a base coat for foil or clear plastics
  • Bump Plate: Is used to create enhanced color, such as rich black
  • = 1 plate @ 100% black
    = 1 plate @ 30% cyan
  • Varnish Plate: Is used to designate where varnish will be applied.

With Plate Builder you can:

  • Create varnish or white objects from existing objects in a file
  • Copy objects from one varnish or white separation to another separation
  • Spread or choke objects belonging to varnish or white separations

Process templates used:

  • Refine process template: Refine > Refine > 1st Ref-Normz
  • Loose page proof process template:Loose Page Output > VirtualProof > VirtualProof.LoosePage
