Prinergy archives, retrieves, and restores appropriately when you change protocols.
When you retrieve files that were archived under a different protocol, Prinergy converts the resource information to the appropriate format.
For example, if you archive jobs under AFP and then convert to SMB with named forks, when Prinergy retrieves the files, it converts the resource information from resource forks to AppleDouble files. If files contain resource information in both AppleDouble files and resource forks, the Prinergy system uses the resource information required by the current protocol and ignores the other resource information.

Mac OS X and client protocol

  • Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier versions connecting to a Windows-based share in AFP mode use Stream Resource Forks only. AppleDouble resource forks are not seen.
  • Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier versions in SMB mode connect to a Unix or Windows share in AppleDouble-based resource forks only. Streams are ignored.
  • Mac OS X 10.5 and later can utilize AFP stream mode or SMB mode in either AppleDouble mode (if legacy Mac OS's exist) or Stream mode (all Macs OS10.5 or later). Windows and generic UNIX servers support either OSX 10.5 mode with an SMB mount.
  • AFP mode Streams are compatible with SMB mode Streams.

Archiving

  • If Prinergy is configured for AFP mode then only the streams-based resource forks are backed up. Any AppleDouble resource forks are ignored.
  • If Prinergy is configured in SMB mode then only the AppleDouble is backed up and streams are ignored.

Restoring

  • If Prinergy is configured in AFP mode, and the backup was done when Prinergy was AFP mode, resource forks are restored as streams.
  • If Prinergy is configured in SMB – AppleDouble mode, and the backup was done in any mode, resource forks are restored as AppleDouble. ForkTranslator in Prinergy converts the Streams from an AFP mode Archive to AppleDouble.
  • If Prinergy is configured in SMB – Stream mode, and the backup was done when Prinergy was in any mode, the resource forks will restore as streams. ForkTranslator in Prinergy converts the AppleDouble from an SMB AppleDouble mode Archive to Streams.
  • If Prinergy was configured for SMB, but the Mac mounts were in AFP mode when the archive was performed, a problem will occur. The Archive would look for AppleDouble to Archive but will prevent the Streams from backing up. In this case all resource forks are destroyed during the backup. The archive will contain no resource fork context. There is no way to restore resource forks in this case.
