Installing an i1 spectrophotometer

The handheld i1 spectrophotometer is used to measure color patches in Spot mode or (i1Pro 2 only) rows of patches in Scan mode with the zebra sensor accessory.

The i1 can also be mounted in an i1iO scanning table for the automated scanning of color charts.

  1. Check the label on the device to determine the model.
  2. Verify that the serial number of the white point matches the serial number of the device.
  3. Before connecting the device, install the driver software— insert the disc that is provided with the device, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Also check the manufacturer’s support Web site for driver updates—download and install the latest version for the applicable for the device model and workstation operating system.
  5. Plug the spectrophotometer’s USB cable directly into the computer on which the Proofer Client software is running—not into a USB hub or keyboard.
  6. Ensure the device firmware is up to date—check the manufacturer’s support Web site and install and install the latest available update for the device model.

Troubleshooting an i1 that is not recognized

  1. Unplug the USB connector, and then reinsert the USB connector.
  2. If the device is still not recognized, close the software, reconnect the device, and restart the software again.
  3. If the connection still fails, turn off the computer, reconnect the device, and restart the computer and software.
When you restart the software, it should recognize the spectrophotometer.

Installing an i1i0 scanning table

An i1iO scanning table equipped with an i1Pro handheld spectrophotometer may be used for the automated measuring of color charts.

Requirements: Install the i1Pro and the latest compatible driver software before installing the i1iO scanning table.

  1. Place the i1iO scanning table on a flat surface close to the computer running the Proofer Client software.
  2. Ensure the scanning table is flat. If necessary, shim the feet under the scanning table to level it.
  3. Insert the i1 spectrophotometer into the arm of the scanning table, and set the height of the head from the electrostatic mat.
Set the height at the lowest point of the scanning table. The i1Pro head should lightly touch at all points.
  4. Plug the power cord into the power source and into the scanning table.
  5. Plug the USB cable into the scanning table and into the computer running the Proofer Client software. Do not plug the USB cable into a USB hub or keyboard.

This duo forms the automated spectrophotometer for measuring color charts.

Note: The i1 spectrophotometer and the scanning table share the USB cable. To manually measure a color, plug the USB cable into the i1. To collect color chart measurements, plug the USB cable into the scanning table.

Troubleshooting an installed i1iO scanning table

The connected i1iO might be a new device or new to this workstation.

Ensure that the each of the following points is true:

  • The i1iO scanning table is level.
  • The i1 is properly mounted in the arm of the i1iO scanning table.
  • The white tile is clean.
  • The chart is flat and free of air pockets.
  • The white glider is in good condition. (The white glider is located at the bottom of the tray where the i1 sits.)
  • The height of the arm is positioned so that the scan head can lightly touch all areas of the chart.
