When processed by Distiller software, the FrameMaker PostScript converts CMYK objects to RGB. FrameMaker PostScript logic tests the RIP to see if it is Distiller software. If the RIP is Distiller software, FrameMaker sets the color space to DeviceRGB and paints all objects in this color space. This in effect creates an RGB PDF file.

When the distilled PDF file is processed by a Refine to PDF process template, the system converts the RGB to CMYK. Because of the conversion, the refined file may be subtly different from the original CMYK. This is not noticeable for many colors, except when 100% black objects become rich black.

If you use Prinergy Evo to refine FrameMaker PostScript to PDF (rather than Distiller software), this problem does not occur.

Solution: Use Prinergy Evo to refine FrameMaker PostScript to PDF. If you must use Distiller software, then download the Kodak Distiller Assistant from the Kodak services and support portal. This will help overcome a number of Distiller software limitations, including this FrameMaker RGB issue.
