What is a tertiary server?
Tertiary servers are CIFS/SMB file servers used to store jobs and data for the Prinergy workflow system—they are not used to run the Prinergy server software or JTPs (job ticket processors).
What does Kodak recommend for job storage?
Job data can be stored on one of the servers running the Prinergy software, either a primary or secondary server. However, this may not desirable in high-volume configurations or where a hot-standby server is configured. Typically, Kodak recommends that customers purchase a Prinergy Premium server and appropriate additional RAID storage from Kodak to be configured as a tertiary server. Alternatively, if you are also using Prinergy archiving, you may choose instead to configure the archiver server as a secondary storage station running the archive and purge JTPs. This offloads job data I/O tasks from a busy primary server.
Which third-party storage solutions can I use as a tertiary server?
Most third party tertiary servers can be used, as long as they are configured appropriately and support the following requirements.
Windows Tertiary Server Requirements
- Supported Windows versions: 2012 R2, 2016, 2019
- SMB/CIFS share created on RAID volume
- Gigabit Ethernet (minimum)
- ARAXI account (or other account Prinergy is using)—must have full administrator rights to the share
UNIX Tertiary Server Requirements
- SMB/CIFS share created on RAID volume
- Gigabit Ethernet (minimum)
- ARAXI account (or other account Prinergy is using)—must have full administrator rights to the share
Note: NFS is not supported.
The tertiary server must be capable of a minimum of 30 MB/s bandwidth per each server connected to it, including all primary and secondary servers. For example, a tertiary server with 90 MB/s bandwidth would be adequate for a Prinergy system with three servers (more or less).
Tertiary servers should be configured as SMB servers in the Prinergy Administrators File Sharing dialog box.
What about backup?
Kodak highly recommends that customers maintain regular backups of their job data. On a tertiary server, any solution is platform-specific and it is the responsibility of the customer to test and configure appropriate software.
Limitations across all solutions
Note: Kodak does not support, and assumes no responsibility for, problems or performance issues that may occur as a result of using third-party products. Problems related to third-party products are not covered by Kodak service contracts.
- The Job Replication option cannot be used with a third-party server. If you want to replicate jobs, you must buy a server from your Prinergy supplier or find an alternate solution.
- A storage area network connected to a server is qualified and supported, according to the operating system of the server that it is connected to.
