You can use the Geometry option in a detailed trapping dialog box to change trap shape (geometry).

  1. In PDF Trap Editor, select the Detailed view of a Trap Page or Trap Selection dialog box.
  2. Click the Geometry tab.
  3. To automatically adjust the shape of a thick trap around thin objects, select Automatic in the Trap Trimming list.
In flexo packaging, where traps sizes are usually larger than commercial work, there is increased chance of misregistration caused by large traps around thin objects. Trap trimming automatically clips traps that might extend into the object receiving the trap. This results in a trap with variable thickness, as shown in the illustration.

Note: If trap trimming is enabled, the trapping time can be longer, so only use the option on files where it is needed. Use it with caution around overprinted objects, because trap trimming does not ignore overprinted objects. You cannot force two traps to butt against each other underneath a keyline.
  4. Set the shape of the corner between two trap segments by selecting Bevel (default), Miter, or Round in the Line Join Style list.
  5. If needed, type a value in the Miter Limit box. The range is 1 to 100.
The Miter Limit shortens the mitered trap to a bevel according to the angle of the join—for example, the more acute the angle of the join, the more beveled the mitered trap.

    Miter Limit

    Result

    5 (default)

When you select 5, miter traps for acute angles are beveled if the mitered point of the trap is greater than 5 times the trap width.

    Lower values

When you select lower values, miter traps for less acute angles are beveled or shortened.

    Higher values

When you select higher values, miter traps for very acute angles only are beveled.

Check Mitered Corners to miter the corners of a trap located where at least three colors meet. This reduces ink buildup at the intersection.

  6. Check Clipped Chokes to angle the ends of a choked trap located where at least three colors meet. The line of the trap continues the line of the object. In case of a misregistration, the angled contour is less noticeable.
