Black Strength

In the Black Strength list, select one of the following options: MinimumLightMediumHeavy, or Maximum.

Each Black Strength option sets the defaults for the Start Black (%) and Maximum Black (%) options. You cannot change the Start Black (%) option, but you can customize the Maximum Black (%) option as desired.

Black Strength is a black generation strategy in which black ink replaces the CMY values that equal gray both in neutrals and chromatic colors. Black Strength can be applied in varying degrees throughout most of the tonal range, starting at a highlight or quarter-tone point. Black Strength reduces ink consumption and improves color stability throughout the printing gamut.

Start Black (%)

The Start Black (%) option displays the tint percentage at which black ink is added. You cannot change this setting.

Maximum Black (%)

The Maximum Black (%) box lets you identify at which tint percentage to stop adding black ink. Type a percentage from 0 to 100.

Total Ink Limit (%)

The Total Ink Limit (%) identifies the maximum sum of the tint values of all inks used at a given point on the proof. Its purpose is to prevent excessive ink buildup. Type a number from 240 to 400. Decimals are not allowed.

For example, when the Total Ink Limit (%) is 300, the sum of the tint values of all inks used will never be greater than 300% at any given point on the proof.
